Certificate of Competence: For Audiometry Screening Practitioners and Audiometry Screening Assistants

This comprehensive 80-hour training programme, written in alignment with South African occupational health legislation and relevant SANS standards, equips healthcare and occupational health professionals with the practical skills and theoretical understanding required to perform accurate, legally compliant occupational audiometric screening. The course supports consistency, reliability, and defensible hearing surveillance in the workplace.

Audiometry Screening Practitioner

On achieving competence, learners will be able to do the following within their scope of practice:

  • Prepare audiometry equipment and the testing environment
  • Conduct occupational audiometry screening tests according to standard protocols
  • Identify unreliable or invalid audiometry test results
  • Interpret audiometry screening test results
  • Record and report audiometry screening findings accurately
  • Manage audiometry screening records in line with workplace requirements

On achieving competence, learners will be able to do the following within their scope of practice:

  • Prepare audiometry equipment and the testing environment
  • Conduct occupational audiometry screening tests according to standard protocols
  • Identify unreliable or invalid audiometry test results
  • Record and report audiometry screening results accurately in accordance with prescribed procedures

* (Interpretation and clinical decision-making are excluded)

All learners complete the same training, but assistants and practitioners are assessed against different competency standards aligned to their scope of practice.

Audiometry Screening Practitioner
  • Tertiary-level anatomy and physiology
  • Professional Registration with SANC, HPCSA or SAMA
  • Access to an Occupational Health Clinic
Audiometry Screening Assistant
  • Minimum of a Grade 12 / NQF level 4
  • Recommended experience in an occupational health setting
  • Access to an occupational health clinic
