Certificate of Competence in Occupational Audiometric Screening Short Course

The September Blended Occupational Audiometric Skills Short Course commenced in Durban at the transition of the seasons, welcoming eight dedicated participants from Ghana. Upon successful completion, learners become eligible to register as Occupational Audiometric Screeners, qualifying them to conduct hearing screenings for employees exposed to industrial noise.

The program is delivered in a hybrid format, combining self-directed study with four structured, one-hour virtual sessions. These sessions cover essential principles of occupational audiometry, including the anatomy and physiology of the ear, classifications of hearing loss, the effects of occupational noise exposure, and relevant workplace health regulations. To enhance engagement, one session incorporates an interactive quiz designed to reinforce learning while encouraging healthy competition among participants.

Learners further consolidate their skills through practical training days, where they apply techniques in simulated settings. They are also required to complete a workplace assignment to demonstrate the practical application of their knowledge, culminating in a final practical assessment.

Throughout the course, participants demonstrated commendable commitment despite demanding schedules and professional responsibilities. The sessions were highly interactive, with discussions tailored to the mining industry, thereby broadening the understanding and application of occupational audiometry.
