Limitations of spirometry

The manoeuvre is highly dependent on worker cooperation and effort and is normally repeated at least three times to ensure repeatability (that all the tests are alike). All spirometry measurements are dependent on achieving the highest FVC manoeuvre possible. Additionally, spirometry should never be used as a standalone tool to diagnose respiratory disorders.

Due to the worker cooperation required, spirometry can only be used on workers who can comprehend and follow the instructions given — thus, this test is not suitable for workers who are confused, heavily sedated, or have limitations that would interfere with forceful blowing.
