Bronchodilator Responsiveness Testing

Definition

Spirometry performed before and after the administration of a bronchodilator.

“Bronchodilator responsiveness testing is a determination of the degree of improvement of airflow in response to bronchodilator administration as measured by changes in FEV1 and FVC. It is commonly undertaken as part of spirometry testing.”(1)

Aim

To assess possible relaxation of bronchial muscle resulting in expansion of the bronchial air passages i.e. determine evidence of reversible airflow limitation.

Indications

Indications for bronchodilator testing

To diagnose and / or follow-up of asthma
To differentiate between asthma and COPD
Gauge subject prognosis
Guide treatment decisions
To determine best lung function

Contraindications to bronchodilator responsiveness testing

The contraindications to bronchodilator responsiveness testing apply to the risks involved with the administration of a beta-agonists and the risk of a single administration for diagnostic purposes is small.
