Evaluating the bronchodilator response

The FEV1 is the preferred measurement for assessing bronchodilator responsiveness because it is so reliable. When the FEV1 changes by ≥12% and 200mls the bronchodilator responsiveness test is positive.  Increases in FEV1 that are <12% and 200mls but are close to these numbers, for example, 8% or 150mls may represent normal variability.

Positive bronchodilator responsiveness

An FEV1 change before and after a bronchodilator of ≥ 12% and 200mls documents a positive bronchodilator response.

Negative bronchodilator responsiveness

An FEV1 change before and after a bronchodilator of < 12% and 200mls documents a negative bronchodilator response. The software of every spirometer should calculate the change in the FEV1 between the pre and post tests. If it does not this is the formula you would use:
