The 2019 Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS) Methods in Clinical Operational Research (MECOR) programme started off with a very happy and very interactive spirometry 1-day certificate of attendance workshop in Dar es Salaam on 9th June 2019.

Seven PATS MECOR Level 1 students used the opportunity presented by PATS MECOR to attend the pre-MECOR meeting spirometry workshop to gain knowledge, confidence and skill in the practical application of spirometry required for future research projects.

Special mention is that spirometry training at PATS MECOR commenced in 2011 and this was the first workshop co-facilitated by colleagues from other countries. Dr Winceslas Katagira (Uganda) and Dr Bibie Said (Tanzania) co-presented the course along with me.

Together with the new knowledge gained, new friends were made and further progress of spirometry in Africa was made.
