Certificate of Competence: For Spirometry Screening Practitioners and their Assistants

This comprehensive 80-hour training programme, written in alignment with the ATS/ERS 2019 Spirometry Guidelines, equips healthcare and occupational health professionals with the practical skills and scientific understanding required to perform high-quality occupational screening spirometry. Aligned with QCTO SP-211002, the course supports accuracy, consistency, and reliable respiratory surveillance in the workplace.

Spirometry Screening Practitioner

On achieving competence, learners will be able to do the following within their scope of practice:

  • Prepare spirometry equipment and the testing environment
  • Conduct occupational spirometry screening tests according to standard protocols
  • Identify unreliable or invalid spirometry screening test results
  • Interpret spirometry screening test results
  • Record and report spirometry screening findings accurately
  • Manage spirometry screening records in line with workplace requirements and within scope of practice
Spirometry Screening Assistant

On achieving competence, learners will be able to do the following within their scope of practice:

  • Prepare spirometry equipment and the testing environment
  • Conduct occupational spirometry screening tests according to standard protocols
  • Identify unreliable or invalid spirometry screening test results
  • Interpret spirometry screening test results
  • Record and report spirometry screening results accurately

* (Result management is excluded from assessments)

All learners complete the same training, but assistants and practitioners are assessed against different competency standards aligned to their scope of practice.

  • Professional Registration with SANC, HPCSA or SAMA
  • Access to an Occupational Health Clinic

  • Minimum of a Grade 12 / NQF level 4
  • Access to an Occupational Health Clinic
